The education requirements to be an administrative assistant

A high school diploma (NQF level 4) and some basic office skills are necessary training for most entry-level administrative assistant positions.

There are one, two and three-year courses and Diplomas
available for additional training for office administrative support roles to provide the skills to succeed in this career.

In South Africa work is seriously afoot to offer qualifications from:
NQF level 5 Higher Certificate
NQF level 6 Diploma
NQF level 7 Bachelors Degree
NQF level 8 Honours Degree
NQF level 9 Masters Degree
NQF level 10 Doctoral degree

Some employers of executive secretaries may require candidates with degrees. Many of these secretaries work closely with high-level executives, so a degree related to the business of the company would be appropriate.

Career paths for
administrative assistants

The possibilities of climbing the corporate ladder are various and depends on each individualís experience, competencies and areas of interest.

Experienced admins will -
Possibility 1: Move into more advanced administrative positions with more responsibilities, such as office Executive Assistants or Office Manager positions

Possibility 2: Move into management (if they have also made the effort to learn about their companyís operations and commit to enhancing their skill set)

Possibility 3: Move out of the field and into into HR, PR, Customer Relations, Marketing, Sales, IT, Logistics

The difference between a job and a career

job is work for which you get paid for.

career is a lifetime journey of building and making good use
of one's skills, knowledge and experiences. It is composed of the jobs held, titles earned and work accomplished over a long period of time, rather than just referring to one position.
